I get asked quite often about continuances. This post does not answer those questions. I plan a post on the subject but it will be a bit later. Instead, this post is about a specific statute allowing continuances in certain paternity cases.
Indiana Code 31-14-8: "IC 31-14-8-4 Continuance of final hearing Sec. 4. Upon the request of any party, the court shall grant a continuance of the final paternity hearing until after the child is born. As added by P.L.1-1997, SEC.6."
I find it interesting that the General Assembly took the time for this statute. I cannot think of any reason I would want a paternity hearing without genetic testing and that requires the presence of the child.
